Communities for solo founders and bootstrappers: 14 compared (2026)
Communities for solo founders and bootstrappers compared: 14 meetups, forums and paid groups, from free indie hacker drinks to revenue-verified SaaS circles.
Key takeaways
- Free and cheap options are common: Indie Hackers Lille's monthly drinks are free, Bootstrapped Makers has a free tier, and Bootstrappers Breakfast charges a small per-event fee, shown as $10.00 on Meetup (currency not named), checked 28 Oct 2026.
- Some groups gate by revenue: Indie Masterminds is for indie hackers working towards $5K MRR, FounderLed runs a revenue-verified Slack for bootstrapped SaaS founders, and Practical Founders' CEO peer groups start at $1M+ ARR.
- Bootstrappers Breakfast says it has met since October 2006, with a Silicon Valley Meetup group of 2,246 members and an in-person breakfast in Redwood City on 6 November 2026.
- Solo Founders Program is an in-person cohort in San Francisco: it takes 2.5% equity to participate and puts in $100K on an uncapped MFN SAFE (currency not named), with applications due by February 2027.
- Solo businesses are common: the UK government estimates that about 75% of private sector businesses had no employees other than the owners at the start of 2025.
The right community for a solo founder or bootstrapper is one where the other members are building with their own money and their own hands, at a stage close to yours. Most founder groups assume a team and a fundraise. The ones below don't. Here are 14 communities, from monthly pub meetups to revenue-gated online groups, each checked on its own page between 25 and 28 October 2026.
A note before you read on: this guide is published by Remote Builders, and one row is ours. We've described it with the same kind of facts as everyone else, and we've left out any number we couldn't find on a community's own page.
Why solo founders need a different kind of community
Solo businesses are the norm, not the exception. The UK government estimates that at the start of 2025 about 4.3 million of the country's 5.7 million private sector businesses, around 75%, had no employees other than the owners. In Australia, the ABS counted 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, and 996,203 of them were employing. Among startups, the Solo Founders report cites Carta data showing that over one-third of new companies in the first half of 2025 were started by one founder.
Building alone means nobody to argue with about pricing, nobody to notice when you've spent a week on the wrong feature, and nobody to celebrate the first paying customer with. A good community fills those gaps. A bad one fills your week with posts from people at a different stage.
How to choose a community as a solo founder
Match the revenue stage
- Before revenue. Bootstrapped Makers is for makers with a live product and nobody paying yet. Indie Hackers' open forum and local meetups suit this stage too.
- Early revenue. Indie Masterminds is built for indie hackers working towards $5K MRR. MicroConf Connect is for bootstrapped SaaS founders, including people still employed and working towards a SaaS.
- Established revenue. FounderLed's Slack is revenue-verified, and Practical Founders' CEO peer groups start at $1M+ ARR.
Decide between local and online
Local meetups give you faces and the odd co-working day: IndieBeers London meets monthly in Shoreditch, Indie Hackers Lille holds monthly drinks with short talks, Indie Hackers & Bootstrappers Vienna is a small monthly pub meetup, Bootstrappers Breakfast runs in-person breakfasts in Silicon Valley, and Hackagu co-works in Bali every Thursday. Online groups work wherever you are: Indie Hackers, WIP, Indie Masterminds, Bootstrapped Makers and FounderLed.
Check what you're giving up
Most groups here cost a small fee or nothing. One is different: Solo Founders Program is an in-person cohort in San Francisco that takes 2.5% equity to participate and puts in $100K on an uncapped MFN SAFE (currency not named). That's a funding decision as much as a community one, so read the terms.

Notes on the table
- Bootstrappers Breakfast says it has met since October 2006, and its Silicon Valley Meetup group shows 2,246 members. It runs moderated 90-minute online roundtables and has chapters elsewhere, and it bans selling or pitching to other attendees.
- IndieBeers London lists meetup #79 for 28 October 2026, and its Meetup page shows 41 attendees for meetup #78. It's the monthly event from Ramen Space, and the group is listed as part of Ramen Club.
- Indie Hackers Lille listed edition #49 on 3 November 2026, and Indie Hackers & Bootstrappers Vienna listed its November meetup for 12 November 2026.
- FounderLed showed 67 applicants in the past week on its application page.
Communities we checked and left out
We left out general small business networking groups whose members mostly aren't building a product or online business, programmes with nothing dated in 2026, and sites that didn't load. If you run a community for solo founders and it's active, tell us and we'll check it.
How to get value in your first month
- Post your numbers. Revenue, churn, what you tried. Bootstrapper communities run on honesty, and specific numbers get specific advice.
- Find two peers, not two hundred. A couple of founders at your stage who you message every week is worth more than a big feed.
- Go to the local meetup even if it's small. Vienna's runs at about 5 to 10 people, and that's the point.
- Ship in public. WIP and Indie Hackers reward people who share what they shipped. Our guide to building in public covers how.
- Keep one broader group. Our comparison of communities for remote founders covers the bigger online options.
Common mistakes
- Joining a VC-flavoured group by accident. If every talk is about raising, you're in the wrong room for a bootstrapped business.
- Paying for three groups at once. Pick one, show up for a month, then decide.
- Consuming instead of contributing. Lurking feels productive and isn't. Answer one question a week.
- Waiting for a local group to appear. If there's no indie hacker meetup in your city, start one. Our guide to starting a founder meetup covers the first three events.
