Key takeaways

  • Most are free to start: CoFoundersLab and FounderCloud have free plans, Enterprise Nation is free to join, Startup Oasis is always free to attend, and YC Startup School is free (checked 28 Oct 2026).
  • Co-founder matching is the most common format: CoFoundersLab, FounderCloud, YC's Co-Founder Matching and Launch Camp all focus on finding a partner.
  • Techstars Startup Weekend runs three-day events where you pitch an idea and form a team, and says it has held 7K+ events in 150+ countries.
  • Local weekly and monthly meetups exist in Arlington, London, Cape Town and Bengaluru, and CEDAT's Bengaluru Meetup group shows 13,870 members.
  • The GEM 2025/2026 Global Report found fear of failure deters 2 in 5 adults from starting a business.

The right community for a first-time founder is one where people a few steps ahead will answer basic questions without making you feel slow, and where you can find a co-founder or test an idea cheaply. Below are 13 communities for first-time and aspiring founders, from online co-founder matching to weekend events and local meetups, each checked on its own pages between 25 and 28 October 2026.

A note before you read on: this guide is published by Remote Builders, our own free community for founders who build companies remotely, which welcomes founders at any stage. It isn't in the table, because it isn't built only for first-time founders. We've left out any number we couldn't find on a community's own page.

How to choose a community as a first-time founder

If you need a co-founder

  • FounderCloud, formerly StartHawk, says 36,000+ founders have joined. Its free plan allows one new conversation a day, and Premium is $24 a month in US dollars.
  • YC Co-Founder Matching is free, with profiles shown only to approved members.
  • Launch Camp runs small co-founder matching meetups in Sydney.

If you want to test an idea

Techstars Startup Weekend runs three-day events where you pitch an idea, form a team and build, with no prior experience needed. Startup Oasis runs free online pitch and breakout sessions. 1 Million Cups Arlington meets every Wednesday at 9 a.m., where local founders present and get feedback.

If you want people to learn alongside

Enterprise Nation is free to join in the UK, with events, local meet-ups and online groups. Startup Canada runs a national tour and free programmes for early-stage entrepreneurs. Ramen Club is a paid online community where many members join pre-product or pre-revenue. Local meetups include Founders Meetup London, Makers & Founders in Cape Town and CEDAT's meetups in Bengaluru.

Communities we checked and left out

We left out groups whose sites blocked us, programmes open only to their cohorts, groups that don't say they're for new founders, and meetups run by organisations we already list. If you run an active community for first-time founders, tell us and we'll check it.

Starting out in numbers

The US Census Bureau counted 534,947 business applications in September 2026, seasonally adjusted. The GEM 2025/2026 Global Report found fear of failure deters 2 in 5 adults from starting a business, and that entrepreneurial education and access to finance hold back the move from startup to established business. A community helps with both: people who've done it before, and introductions you couldn't get alone.

How to get value in your first month

  1. Pick one co-founder platform and one live group. Matching works better when you also meet people in person.
  2. Write your idea in one sentence. Post it and ask what's wrong with it. Our guide to validating a startup idea covers what to test first.
  3. Go to a weekend event. Startup Weekend compresses months of learning into three days.
  4. Ask basic questions. Everyone in these groups started somewhere.
  5. Read our guide to finding a co-founder before you commit to anyone.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until the idea is perfect. Communities help most before you've built anything.
  • Paying for premium matching straight away. Use the free plans first.
  • Picking a co-founder after one meeting. Work on something small together first.
  • Only consuming. Share your progress. People help founders who are visibly moving.
