Free AI and cloud credits for startups (2026): AWS, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Cloudflare and more
Free AI and cloud credits for startups in 2026: what AWS, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Cloudflare, NVIDIA and ElevenLabs give, who qualifies, and the catches.
Key takeaways
- Without investors, the credits you can get today are smaller than the headlines: AWS Activate Founders starts at US$1,000 (up to US$5,000 for some), Cloudflare's bootstrapped tier is US$10,000, and Google's Start tier is US$2,000 (all checked 28 Oct 2026).
- The big numbers need an investor or partner: AWS Portfolio goes up to US$200,000 with a provider's Org ID, Google's funded tiers run from US$200,000 to US$350,000 for pre-seed to Series A startups, and Microsoft says up to US$150,000.
- Credits often don't cover the model you want. Anthropic's startup credits work only on its own API, not on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, and Microsoft says third-party models on Foundry, including Anthropic's, aren't covered by its startup credits.
- Anthropic's startup programme was closed to new applications when we checked on 28 Oct 2026; founders whose VC is in its partner network may still get up to US$100,000 in API credits through that VC.
- Programmes without a funding test exist: NVIDIA Inception is free with no funding or revenue requirement, and ElevenLabs gives 12 months of free platform access to startups with fewer than 25 employees.
You can get free AI and cloud credits as a startup in 2026, but how much depends mostly on whether you have investors. Bootstrapped founders can usually get US$1,000 to US$10,000 from the big clouds, while the US$100,000 to US$350,000 headlines are for startups backed by an accelerator, VC or partner. The other catch is where the credits work: cloud credits often don't pay for the AI model you actually want to use.
Every figure below comes from the programme's own page, checked on 28 October 2026. Most perk lists online repeat old numbers from aggregators, and an AI search answer we checked on 27 October 2026 said Anthropic has no startup programme, which isn't right.

If you're bootstrapped: what you can realistically get
Start with the programmes that don't ask about funding:
- Cloudflare Tier 3, US$10,000. The largest no-investor amount in this list. Its FAQ says Workers AI is covered "up to a $2,500 cap for Tier 3", so most of the credit goes on hosting, storage and networking rather than models. The same page also says startups must be "funded up to Series B, with that funding received within the last 12 months", which sits oddly next to a tier for self-funded companies, so read the terms before you count on it.
- AWS Activate Founders, US$1,000 to US$5,000. You need an AWS account on a paid tier plan and must be new to Activate credits.
- NVIDIA Inception. "Inception is free. The program doesn't have application fees, membership fees, or equity requirements." It's a route to partner cloud credits and preferred pricing rather than a fixed credit amount.
- ElevenLabs Grants, if you're building with voice. The grant converts to a free plan when the 12 months end or when you have 10,000 credits left.
- Google's Start tier, US$2,000, but only if you're founded in the past 2 years and plan to seek venture funding soon. Google says other applicants are pointed to its US$300 free trial or AI Studio.
Stacking these gives a bootstrapped AI startup a few months of runway on infrastructure. It rarely covers a year of heavy model usage, so price your product as if you're paying for the model from day one. Our guide to pricing an AI product has the maths.
The catch: credits don't always cover your model
This is where most founders get caught out.
- Anthropic's credits are first-party only. Its page says the credits work in the Claude Console and "can't be used on AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or other third-party platforms".
- Microsoft's credits don't cover third-party models. Its startup credits guide, updated 22 October 2026, says "Models sold directly by Azure and billed through your Azure subscription are covered with your startup credits. Models from third-party providers (including Anthropic) and partners via Microsoft Marketplace aren't covered." It says Fireworks models on Foundry are covered because they're billed through Azure, and GitHub usage only counts once you connect your Azure subscription as a GitHub payment method.
- Cloudflare caps model usage inside each tier (US$2,500, US$10,000 and US$50,000 for Workers AI on Tiers 3, 2 and 1).
- AWS's page doesn't say which Bedrock models its credits cover. It points to the AWS Promotional Credit Terms, so check those before you build on a specific model.
The practical rule: decide which model your product needs first, then pick credits that pay for that model, not the other way round.
If you have investors or an accelerator
The big tiers run through partners:
- AWS Activate Portfolio, up to US$200,000, needs an Org ID from an Activate Provider such as an accelerator, angel investor or VC firm.
- Google's funded tiers, US$200,000 to US$350,000 over two years, need verifiable pre-seed to Series A funding. For AI startups, Google lists year 1 at "100% up to $250,000 USD" and year 2 at "20% up to an additional $100,000 USD" in credits.
- Anthropic: "If your VC is in Anthropic's partner network, you may be eligible to receive up to $100K in additional API credits, claimed through your VC."
- Cloudflare Tiers 1 and 2 need backing by an affiliated partner (US$100,000 under US$5M raised, US$350,000 at US$5M and above).
Ask your investor or accelerator which provider codes they hold before you apply directly, because applying on your own can lock you into the smaller tier.
Common mistakes
- Building around a model your credits don't cover. Check where each credit can be spent before you commit to a stack.
- Treating credits as revenue. They end. Microsoft says your subscription moves to pay-as-you-go when they run out.
- Applying direct when a partner code exists. Accelerators and VCs often unlock bigger tiers.
- Missing the age limits. AWS, Cloudflare and NVIDIA say 10 years; Google's Start tier says 2.
- Letting test resources burn credits. Idle servers and forgotten clusters eat credits quietly. Set budget alerts on day one.
Checklist
- Write down the model and cloud your product actually needs.
- Apply to the no-investor programmes first: Cloudflare Tier 3, AWS Activate Founders, NVIDIA Inception, and ElevenLabs if you use voice.
- If you have an investor or accelerator, ask which provider codes they hold.
- Read each programme's terms for which services and models the credits cover.
- Set budget alerts at 50%, 80% and 100% of your expected credit burn.
- Work out your cost per customer while the credits last, so the switch to paid doesn't surprise you.
- Recheck the pages every quarter: amounts, tiers and open or closed status change.

Questions people ask
- Can a bootstrapped startup get free cloud credits?
- Yes, but smaller amounts. On 28 October 2026, AWS Activate Founders started at US$1,000 for self-funded startups, with up to US$5,000 for select participants, and Cloudflare's Tier 3 gave US$10,000 to bootstrapped or self-funded startups with less than US$1M raised. Most larger tiers need an investor, accelerator or partner.
- Does Anthropic give free Claude API credits to startups?
- Its startup programme page said on 28 October 2026 that the current cohort was full and it wasn't accepting new applications. It lists up to US$45,000 in discounts and credits from companies building with Claude, and up to US$100,000 in additional API credits for founders whose VC is in Anthropic's partner network, claimed through the VC. Those credits only work on the first-party Claude API.
- Can I use Azure startup credits for Claude or other third-party models?
- Not according to Microsoft. Its startup credits guide says models sold directly by Azure and billed through your Azure subscription are covered, but models from third-party providers, including Anthropic, and partners via Microsoft Marketplace aren't.
- How much are Google Cloud startup credits?
- Google's page lists a Start tier of US$2,000 for startups founded in the past 2 years with a working MVP and plans to seek venture funding, and funded tiers of US$200,000 to US$350,000 for startups with verifiable pre-seed to Series A funding. AI startups can get up to US$250,000 in year 1 and up to another US$100,000 in year 2.
- What happens when the credits run out?
- You start paying. Microsoft, for example, says your Azure subscription moves to pay-as-you-go automatically, and it asks for a credit card partly for that reason. Plan your unit costs while the credits last, not after.
